The NYCOMS Nerve Repair Unit

Microsurgical repair of the trigeminal nerve is not a common skill set found in an oral maxillofacial practice.

At NYCOMS, we are fortunate to have Dr. Salvator Ruggiero who has been trained and is experienced in this surgical discipline. Dr. Ruggiero learned these skills at Harvard University while training at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The NYCOMS approach for the evaluation and treatment of patients with traumatic injuries to the nerves of the jaws and tongue has been specially developed for the practice.

After an initial evaluation, a choice of options is presented to the patient. If indicated, surgery is performed at Northwell Long Island Jewish Medical Center or New York Presbyterian Medical Center.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Heterogenous group of inflammatory disorders
Inclusive term encompassing JRA and all other related arthritides presenting in childhood

JIA is classified into one of six types:
- Systemic
- Polyarthritis
- Oligoarthritis
- Enthesitis
- Psoriatic
- Undifferentiated
JIA Diagnosis:
- Clinical diagnosis, no diagnostic test exists
- Lab results can be supportive, but not required for diagnosis
- Must present prior to 16 years of age
- Symptoms must persist for at least 6 weeks
- Psoriatic
- Undifferentiated
JIA Treatment
DMARDs (Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs)
- Biologic (methotrexate)
- Nonbiologic (TNF agents, ie: Humira)
Non DMARDs
NSAIDs: palliative, not curative
Adjunctive therapies
- Intra-articular glucocorticoid injection
- Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy
