At the New York Center for Orthognathic and Maxillofacial Surgery (NYCOMS), we have a highly trained and skilled team of oral surgeons. We provide a full range of simple and complex oral surgeries to patients from infants through adulthood. Our services include, but are not limited to:
Orthognathic surgery: Our top focus is on corrective jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery. We follow a multi-stage process that begins with a comprehensive evaluation and includes orthodontists and other professionals as needed. We perform not only adult surgeries, but also pediatric and neonatal orthognathic surgeries, in tandem with a multi-specialty team of pediatric experts.
Zygoma and dental implants/jaw reconstruction: Jaw reconstruction often involves replacing one or more teeth. Teeth that are severely damaged by dental trauma or decay may also need to be replaced. If you have enough strong, healthy jawbone, we may be able to place traditional dental implants right away. Otherwise, we can perform bone grafting or, for upper teeth, use zygoma implants that are anchored to the cheekbones. This immediate-load solution lets us place a fixed arch of new teeth on the same day.
Craniofacial surgery/alveolar cleft bone grafting/reconstruction: Craniofacial surgery corrects trauma or birth defects in the skull. While it can be performed at any age, birth defects are generally repaired in babies aged 3 to 12 months. Cleft lip is an opening in the upper lip, which can be repaired when the infant is just 3 to 6 months old. Cleft palate, which is an opening in the roof of the mouth, is usually corrected at 9 to 12 months of age. Later surgeries such as alveolar cleft bone grafting are normally performed over the next few years to improve functionality and appearance.
Maxillofacial Pathology: Maxillofacial pathology encompasses all diseases of the mouth and jaw, from salivary gland disease to tumors and lesions, and even systemic illnesses that cause oral pathology. We will carefully evaluate and diagnose your condition, and then suggest the treatment plan that is best for you.
Temporomandibular Joint Surgery: The temporomandibular joint, a sliding hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull, can become misaligned. This causes a painful condition known as TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder). Mild cases may be treated with non-surgical solutions, while surgery is generally required for more severe cases. Our surgical options range from minimally invasive arthroscopy to full temporomandibular joint replacement.
