The founding surgeon of the NYCOMS team, Dr. Stephen Sachs received his dental degree from Columbia University. His specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery was at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He joined the staff of LIJ shortly after his residency and became the chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He maintained this position for 17 years. During this time he became one of the pioneers of modern day orthognathic surgery. In 1988 he moved on from the hospital to fulfill his dream of developing a highly specialized team of surgeons and center of excellence that focuses on the most challenging of reconstructive patients. Dr. Sachs has devoted his career to taking care of all patients especially children with special needs as in the Cleft Palate population. He is currently the director of the cleft palate team at St. Charles Hospital, in Port Jefferson.
